These are the lightest crampons you can get. I have used them all winter and without modification they are only good for flat glacier riding and short term use. The problem is that the ropes rub against the aluminum and cut through the rope. This happened about an hour after my first ascent in the White Mountains, the steep terrain was too tough for these cats. I used a spare set of crampons to complete the route and when I got home I dug into the problem and the fix allowed me to use them safely for the rest of the winter without the need for a backup. What you need is some kind of grinding line or a set of small files. I think a grinding line would have the best result. Run the sanding cord along the lanes that the ropes will take, making sure each edge/corner is smooth. The photos show the initial processing and my (admittedly lackluster) smoothing work. I've used modified crampons on 6 white mountain hikes with just paracord in case the ropes break, but that never happened! Good luck to all.
