My son is 3.5 years old and he was delighted with this bright puppy. He loves loves loves his plush "friends" but it's very cool. At first I was a little apprehensive about letting him sleep with him after seeing how bright the projector light was and reading the eye damage warnings and all. But my child is an extreme follower of the rules. He's had a life-threatening food allergy his entire life, so he grew up with a very healthy understanding of following the rules to keep him safe. That's how I designed it. I explained to him that the light is very, very bright and could hurt his eyes if he looks directly into it. I showed him how to put him to bed, turn him on and switch modes. I reinforced the idea that it's not a cuddle friend as long as the lights are on. He should just lie down. Since he can only see the light projected on his ceiling when the pup is on his bed, he didn't question it at all. In the morning he was happy to tell me all about his night with his new puppy. . When it automatically turned off, he just turned it back on. He changed the color of the lights and stared at them until he fell asleep. Later, when the light went out again, he picked it up and clung to it. In the morning when he woke up but knew he didn't have to get up yet, he put it back down, turned on the light and watched them spin. So for us this pup was a big win. It's definitely worth considering your child's age and how they might handle a toy with so many rules and a high safety risk. But my son tolerated it very well. The puppy looks fine. Its fur is very soft and pleasant to the touch. The shiny ears and feet are a bit rougher, as are the eyes and nose, but that didn't seem to matter to my son in terms of their comfort. The buttons are easy to use and require little force to press. So I'm not worried that my son might call one while he's sleeping. It's worth taking some time to read the instructions on how to operate the different modes so you can explain them to your child right away (mine hates it when I give him a new toy but makes him wait while I turn the pages to tell him how to use it). The compartment that houses the electrical equipment is accessible with Velcro on the bottom of the pup. It is securely fastened and although my son was able to open it he had no problems. The batteries are hidden behind a screw cap and the component box is securely fastened so it cannot be pulled out at all. The light show is really beautiful! And watching the lights on his ceiling really helped my son fall asleep a lot quicker than usual so it was amazing. Overall, this pup is a great addition to our family. My son loves this. And it suits me that the risk to him from the light is low because I know he is following very closely the instructions and rules that have been developed for his safety.
