These are fragrant and great-tasting water filters made from granular activated carbon. Great job, but it MUST be preceded by pleated paper filters (also sold by Pentair). Paper filters remove particles that quickly clog these more expensive filters. We've been using both filters for about 30 years (recently purchased from Revain). We have well water that contains manganese oxide, a thin black substance. How long do they serve? It depends on how much water you use. But we have found that changing the paper filter quarterly allows us to change the carbon filter every 6-8 months. Finally, to be able to use these filters, you must also buy containers to put them in and connect the system to the water supply. Installing a bypass is highly recommended so you have water while someone in your family replaces the cartridge. Drainage is also required to allow the holders to drain. For us, the process takes 30-45 minutes depending on whether we're replacing one or both filters and whether we've been good at not letting them get too dirty. . Cleaning the cartridge holder is the hardest part of the job. And remember, if you remove the top, the filters will fill with water. So get ready Prepare a medium sized garbage bag for the used filter. And have enough paper towels. Last tip, don't lose the o-ring. Be sure to give it a thorough clean and the groove it sits in. Then lubricate it liberally with petroleum jelly before reinstalling it. Invest in a large can of general purpose stuff from CVS etc. No fun but worth the effort if you want clear, great tasting water.
