Soft, with no foreign smell. I feel completely comfortable when my baby sleeps on this pillow. It's supportive but not so big that her face gets lost in it when she sleeps on her stomach. From the moment I took it out of the box it didn't smell anymore. I washed it before she used it because that's what moms do lol but when I took it out of the box it didn't give off any chemical or weird smells. Outside the pillow is very soft, snow-white. No need for a pillowcase. I just toss it in the laundry every week or two (which is nice because there are nights when her diapers leak or she goes to bed dirty from playing outside). This will be a good gift for little ones. They always enjoy having everyday objects just their size.
