It is impossible to protect your pet with this article. I bought it because I figured my two very small dogs (a pug and a shih tzu) could fit in together and enjoy looking out the window on car rides like my much larger labrador retriever. I tie my dogs up with really awesome car seat belts which are designed to attach to the safety anchors used to attach child car seats so they don't fly through the windshield in a crash. From the look and description of this child car seat, I was under the impression that it could be secured with a seat belt, but NOT. In addition, contrary to the product description, it is too small for two dogs, no matter how small. It is extremely lightweight - if you try to thread the seat belt through the designated "slots" the booster seat will not stay flat on the car seat. It's bulky and a waste of space. If you really think your little dog is missing out if he or she isn't watching the world rush by as you speed down the freeway (mine prefers to curl up and take a nap) - and you can do it safely (not sure if that's possible) - I would attempt to secure one of those hard top cargo boxes by looping the seat belt through the carry holes and laying the bed on top. At least you can store things there.
