Pad protects surface
I have cats that climb on the table sometimes in the night and disrupt everything by getting the tablecloth to slide -- and if you don't put the tablecloth on they can scratch the table. The pad stays where I put it and keeps tablecloths from sliding so it does a much better job of protecting the table than a tablecloth alone. I believe the surface of the pad could be damaged by putting a too-hot pan on it -- but anything that hot would have damaged the table so I wouldn't think of this as a substitute for a trivet.
