This new version of the classic silent film on Blu-Ray has been beautifully - and I'm sure with great effort - restored and remastered, a monumental achievement, especially given the film's age Negative . The film won its first Best Picture Oscar, then Best Production, and is the only silent film to have received this honor. It was mined by the great William " Wild Bill " Wellman, who was himself a WWI fighter pilot. His partner in the film was Richard Arlen. This story has a big love story (both on and off screen) - Richard Arlen began an affair with Jobina Ralston, who played her on-screen love interest, Sylvia, and later married her. Clara Bow's character Mary was in love with Jack, Buddy Rogers' character, who also had a crush on Sylvia. Bow had an off-screen affair with Gary Cooper, who had a small but important role in the film, made the most of it and turned out to be his breakthrough role. The best part of the film are the dogfight scenes and they are some of the best in cinema! Frail WWI fighters and bombers were nothing but wood, canvas and glue, with an engine and an open cockpit with a mounted machine gun, usually in front of the pilot. The pilot had little protection and if he or his plane was hit, he went with it below, there were no parachutes. In 1927 there were no special effects simulating dogfights. What you see on screen is what was actually filmed. I think this is only the second film from the silent era that I've watched in its entirety. If you watch it, you'll immediately notice that the actors are re-enacting their roles to make up for the lack of audible dialogue. I'm not a huge fan of silent films, but this one is so well made and so beautifully restored that it was a pleasure to watch. My highest recommendation. -
