Just because there have been many reports of grayscale in recent years doesn't speak to KitchenAid's ability to address quality control issues. The solution that worked for me was to clean the bowl with a baking soda paste as recommended on the KitchenAid website. I purchased this model of KitchenAid (Aqua Sky) last week (March 2016) and had an issue with gray buildup around the bowl. It ruined my very first recipe, a batch of lovingly made yeast waffle batter, when I started kneading. At first I thought it was grease dripping from the motor into the food, then I realized the dirt was coming from the bowl which I washed once before using. (The printing on the bottom of the bowl indicates it was made in India.) After throwing away my ingredients, I washed them twice with a Scotch-Brite sponge, hot water, and dish soap, then gave them a great cleaning twice more thoroughly comet. Detergent, then rinse thoroughly. But still, wiping the inside of the bowl with a white kitchen towel left a gray residue! After further research I found a page on the KitchenAid website that describes this problem. You can find it if you google "KitchenAid remove leftovers from stainless steel bowls". The article states that the residue comes from factory polishing and cannot be removed in the dishwasher or by normal hand washing. He recommends 1) The Bartender's Friend, or 2) Lemon Juice and Salt Mixture, or 3) Baking Soda Paste. I bought Bartender's Friend but wanted to try the other steps first in case it might help someone else. Reading this, who would choose not to take a special trip for The Bartender's Friend? After rubbing it thoroughly with lemon juice and salt, there was still a light coating on the towel. There was no residue after cleaning with baking soda and I didn't have to use The Bartender's Friend. Then I successfully cooked my recipe and there were no problems with the leftovers.
