An energy audit team that visited us last fall recommended this MERV/MPR furnace filter. They said this prevents the oven from overheating, which saves energy. I used one of the more expensive high end filters thinking it would make the air cleaner but decided to give them a try in the winter. They have worked great and the savings are real. First, the filters themselves cost less than high-end filters, and second, your electric bill is down about $50 a month. To be blunt, we've made a few changes to the energy audit so all of these things add up PLUS this El Niño winter is driving utility bills down. But for now I don't see any downsides to these filters and I'm glad I tried them. Let's see what happens in spring when there is more pollen in the air. At this point, I will evaluate our family members' reaction to spring allergies and decide if we should switch to a higher tier filter.
