You can hear your surroundings while wearing it, but you can also turn up the volume on your TV, game console or other device without disturbing your surroundings. You can even connect 2 devices at the same time if you want. To really enhance the immersion experience, this Sony portable speaker is equipped with vibration control. That means you really feel like you're part of the movie you're watching or the game you're playing. I have to admit I've worn it when I've seen a horror movie and been scared to death more than once. However, the best thing about this portable speaker for me is that I can watch TV without disturbing others in the house. Not only do I have hearing problems, I also work the night shift. This means I'm often awake when others are asleep and enjoy watching movies when I'm not working. Everyone knows that low volume movies aren't the same anymore. And I have a beautiful 4K TV, so I don't want to be limited to my phone or computer to watch movies just because other people are sleeping. This solved my problem.
