This filter level removes such things. Your water will taste better if you use them. They will not remove the real dirt. The first portion will leave some dust from the charcoal. Either rinse under the sink or throw away the first water. Filters come in different levels of cleaning of contaminants. This one is unrated but based on the description I believe it is NSF 42, see summary below. One star deducted for lack of NSF rating. NSF/ANSI 42: Drinking Water Treatment Plants - Aesthetic Effects. Filters certified to this standard reduce certain aesthetic or non-health contaminants (chlorine taste and odor, and particulate matter). Essentially, these filters improve the taste of your water. NSF/ANSI 53: Drinking Water Treatment Plants - Health Effects (also includes NSF/ANSI 42 certification). Filters certified to this standard reduce certain harmful contaminants. These filters use carbon filtration, but vary in their ability to remove substances, so you'll need to check each filter. NSF/ANSI 401: Emerging Compounds/Unintended Contaminants. Also removes some pharmaceutical residues from the water.
