Plastic, with all the usual caveats

The box oddly shows a "steel" model on one side and a "plastic" model on the other. This is supposed to be dual use but I checked the product listing again which says the rulers are made of ABS plastic. The rulers flex quite a bit, and those edges are almost guaranteed to chip and wear out over time. . Some friction between the rulers isn't a bad thing, but it's enough to make it difficult to set the scale to precise degrees. The locking knob is easy to grip, tighten and loosen. The dual on-off/zero button bothered me, but you have to hold the button down for a second before it turns off -- pressing the zero usually takes a fraction of the time. Second, there is little risk of disappointment. I especially like the battery compartment with a little protrusion on the door to push the door in and out. You won't change batteries often, but when you're in the middle of a job you don't want to fiddle with a flimsy plastic door to open it. degrees + minutes (one degree = 60 minutes). For example, 7.50 degrees would be 7 degrees and 30 minutes. I will plead ignorance of who works this way, I don't!
