I've only used it twice and haven't checked the accuracy yet which seems to be a stumbling block for others who say it works to around 1/4 accuracy (not accurate, ahem .. exactly ), but if you can take it, let me warn you of the potential danger. String mode can snap your finger or even gouge out your eye - the string is spring actuated and rewound into the device by a VERY strong spring force. Lots of mechanical tape measurers do the same thing, but all the ones I've seen have a metal tape measure, you have to be careful not to just pull the trigger and it ignites, willy-nilly flying back into the device without careful checking. that's because he can whip and hit you. But these metallics don't have much potential for movement because they're big, wide bands of metal. This device uses a cord instead of a metal band. This string can twist in any direction (any UNPREDICTABLE direction - you can't predict where it's going to go) with much more force and much faster than a metal strap. Worse, it has a metal fork at the end of the rope, which I've found can pierce your skin if a finger or even an eye is unfortunate enough to get in its way. In fact, I severely cut the finger of the hand holding the device when I accidentally let go of about 6 feet of the taut cord. DO NOT let the string fly back on its own; ALWAYS help him when he pulls himself back into the device by holding him with one hand while holding the device with the other. This device does not have a "soft" trigger mechanism like I have seen on several metal tape measures. I'm warning you, this can WEAR. In fact, I think this is sufficient for security reasons that prevent me from recommending it at all, despite the accuracy issue reported by many others. Now I have to see if my new fridge will fit in the space I measured. this device, or if it is 1/4 larger. :-)
