This is really one of the best features of this machine. I can salt one end and pepper the other, which I did for a while. Then I read this cookbook about salt, sugar, fat, acid and heat and put the salt in a bowl. Now I use the other end to grind up whole spices like allspice berries. First, I had to get into the habit of making sure I opened the ends properly, otherwise pepper ended up all over the floor (yes, that happened to me); After taking the time to learn how to use it properly, it works great. I find it very easy to open and clean and then refill. Never had a problem maintaining a charge.
