When you're in a simple situation you probably don't need it, and when you're in a difficult situation you can't count on it is working. The router piece looks pretty solid and houses a web console that manages both the router and the extender. If the expander is on and in range, you may see its signal quality indicator on the console, just a single number, not dB or anything like that. If it's not communicating, you only have a three-color LED on the expander to see what's going on. I have three buildings with metal roofs, a two story house. It's just over 200 feet from the deck at one end to the other side of the storage building. At about half that distance I can get 2.4GHz propagation fairly well, but 5GHz barely gets through the off-diagonal bottom. Okay, then just use 2.4, right? With this consumer-oriented mechanism, this is not an option. Whether the color of the LED is based on the quality of the connection at 2.4 GHz cannot be determined. It also doesn't seem possible to get the extender's hard ethernet port to work on a 2.4GHz network. The hard port on the expander is a very nice feature, when it works it allows me to use my old machines without a USB wifi adapter. But the extension cord gets very hot and often stops working. All in all, it's a useful thing to have on hand, but it doesn't provide a satisfactory connection to my home network.
