I'm not a professional photographer or techie, but I appreciate good photography and quality photographic equipment. I wasn't thrilled with my Nikon D80 and I was very happy with my Nikon D200 which I bought new for $720 (what a bargain!). and more reviews. Best ever rating from The Imaging Resource (google it). So I sold my Nikon D80, Nikon D200 and 3 main lenses to pay for this new camera. I also bought David Bush's digital guide to the Nikon D300 which is very helpful. You will read all about this camera in many other reviews. Just want to say that the color is accurate, the build quality is amazing and user friendly. Very small nose at high ISO. I think my favorite aspect is the four separate shooting menus. They're very easy to use (even for me), independent of each other, and you can always reset them to default if you think you're lost. I felt very confident navigating through all the menus. I use it with a Nikon 16-85mm VR lens (around $600). Yes, you can take good photos with it right away. Of course, as you learn more about the camera, you have more control over exposure, depth of field, etc. That's my advice. If you have the money, around $1700, buy this camera body! This is the best camera body you can buy without going for a full frame which is way more expensive. Buy a full Nikon zoom lens and upgrade to a more expensive lens in the future if you wish. In the digital world, it is the camera body that is crucial for accurate color reproduction etc. When it comes to lenses, Nikon doesn't make crappy lenses. I find the VR (Vibration Reduction) lens very useful because I don't like using tripods. It's a bit heavy compared to the D80 as it's a solid magnesium alloy body. If you want light weight, buy a compact one. In the Nikon D300 manual, Nikon clearly states that the sensor must not be touched under any circumstances. If you cannot remove dust from the sensor by blowing or using the built-in dust shaker, have a highly qualified Nikon Authorized Technician do it. (applies to all digital SLR cameras). My previous film cameras were Minolta SRT 102, Leica Rangefinder M2, Contax with Zeiss lens so I had some of the best. This new Nikon D300 DX digital camera did not disappoint. I'll have fun with it. denim
