I've only had a Canon for a few years. Using the home album. Little did I know I had to do a picture or print test about every week and the machine ran great with almost complete neglect for probably 10 years. Ink is always available at Office Depot. In the end I gave up - after literally 10 years of almost complete oblivion. I have an Epson 960. I think they stopped making it and ink the next day. It worked - with non-Epson ink - but eventually failed (a few years ago). A new "service box" or something similar was needed. Epson said it was professional technical work. To be honest, at the time I was driving back and forth, plus labor, plus parts (which Epson couldn't even give me an estimate of "within $100"), I just decided on one to buy a new machine. I took the 970 because I don't like complexity and variety. Many, many, many acute questions when buying. "It's new, not remanufactured," "It uses the same ink as the 960 and we guarantee we're still making that ink" (They told me the ink cartridges are the same as the 960, for which they denied they still produce ink). New "in the box" so included a replacement service box - my "new 960 boxed by Best Buy" did not include this additional service box. All in all the 970 printed the way I wanted it BUT I have to order non Epson cartridges online and replace them when there are signs that they might be low. A NOTICE. Just don't waste time, paper or ink trying "another picture". Simply replace suspect cartridges immediately. Still cheaper than Epson cartridges, and I aggressively check and test prints and inks every few days, or when I'm out of town, quickly upon my return, or have someone drop by once a week (we have more expensive dogs and plants). as printer for a long shot) and run the page. I emphasize that dogs and plants have priority. (I think I was just repeating it!) I would have said "short," but I wasn't short. The prints fit my 4x6 needs but are high maintenance. Why am I moving on instead of going to Walgreen's? Because it's a hobby. But the next purchase will NEVER be EPSON again.
