When I got my new gear I found it to be a lot lighter than the old one I had taken off. I compared both gears side by side and after visually inspecting the teeth of the old gear I was inclined to put it back as the teeth were fine. The problem was solved when I reassembled the gear with a new part and couldn't get the pin through the gear and shaft. With a suitable punch, the pin only goes 2/3 through the gear and shaft before hanging on the other side. I pulled the pin out and put a "scratch number" in the pinion hole to ensure alignment between the pinion and shaft, then tried driving the pin in from the opposite side. It didn't work, the same thing happened. Eventually I gave up and replaced the old gear.
