Review on 💻 GL.iNet GL-AR750 (Creta) Travel AC VPN Router: 300Mbps Wi-Fi, 128MB RAM, MicroSD Storage Support, Repeater Bridge, OpenWrt/LEDE pre-Installed - Includes Power Adapter and Cables by Alan Lewis

The main reason for the purchase was to provide an isolated LAN in hotel rooms during a trip to China. Second, an attempt had to be made to set up a VPN tunnel outside of China. For both purposes, this device worked flawlessly. Uptime for this setup was a little high, but I didn't have much trouble getting it to work or getting the VPN profiles to work and connecting to tunnel endpoints that support OpenVPN. As mentioned in another review, the device has a low-powered processor. So it supports VPN tunnels, but not at full bandwidth. I saw about 2MB of throughput in the tunnel. With the VPN turned off, I've seen throughput of 50-60 Mbps. It's not clear to me if the slight drop when talking directly to a Wi-Fi hotspot is due to a slow router, or if it's just inherent in the extra buffering, or if the extra radio traffic in the same area is causing interference that slows down down the connection. In any case, it worked perfectly for my purposes. I didn't want VPN access in the router to stream Netflix, I wanted to be able to access US websites, my email and messages without traffic going through Chinese servers if I could avoid it. I also wanted to avoid leaking information to the local WAN and anything between the hotel and the US WANs in China. If I wanted to stream video to a device, I would try to bypass the tunnel in the router and run a VPN client on a more powerful processor - like my iPhone, iPad, or laptop - for such traffic. For the price and functionality I am very happy with this purchase. I think they did a good job of finding a good compromise between functionality and performance limitations for the device. I'm glad I can run it from the USB port on my laptop. (I'm actually using it now as I write this review, from a coffee shop.)
