Haven't used hair products in almost 30 years

I haven't used hair products since Aqua Net in the 80's. At the time, men's hair products consisted of gel, mousse, or hairspray. They all had one thing in common. They gave hold, which made the hair stick together and make it very difficult to style. This material has one great advantage. It actually coats every single hair to make it manageable. Although I find it a bit messy, I never cease to be amazed at how my hair does exactly what I want when I use it. It does take some getting used to though, simply because I'm not used to my hair behaving exactly the way I want it to. My interpretation of this product is that it is meant to be styled and not held in place. I use it in combination with a hairspray to achieve the desired effect. I have found that when I want to add volume, which is my usual trick, applying to damp hair and then blow drying gives excellent results. I start with a very small amount (better too little than too much) and style my hair back. Then I brush forward when blow-drying and style once my hair is dry. When I want my hair to lie flat, for example when I'm going to a formal event, I apply it to damp hair and then comb/style it without using a blow dryer. I recommend using this product more than once. My first applications were simply wrong. I applied too much the first time and had to wash my hair immediately. I still put too much in the second time, but the third time I had less. It took me a few more uses to really learn how to do what I wanted to do with my hair, but after a few weeks of use I feel like an old pro. It takes me longer to get my blow dryer and turn it on than it does to style my hair, which is a win.
