I have 4 skylights in my kitchen which make it hot in the mornings during the summer months. I was researching skylight blinds but didn't want to jump in for a $500 solution that might not work. I decided to try exterior window film. Not a newbie to window film, I have found this product to be neither lighter nor more difficult than other brands I have used. If you've never done this before, cut a smaller piece of film and practice just to get a feel for it. Here are six things I've learned working with window films: 1. Work on one window at a time.2. Clean window. Go over the glass with a scraper with a blade. Clean window. Go over the glass with a scraper with a blade. Clean window. When you think it's perfectly clean, run a razor blade over the glass and clean again. If you start with dirt, stains or imperfections on the glass, you will end up with a blister.3. There is never too much soap and water on a window or film. If you use too little, the film is likely to stick to the window prematurely. When this happens, it's almost impossible to fix unless lines and "cracks" appear in the film. 4. Use a real window wiper. This simplifies the job, reduces blistering and gives a better finish.5. Use a real utility knife with a new sharp blade. When making multiple windows, change the blade regularly. While I appreciate the maker including the knife, I will be using them to open boxes; However, I use a real utility knife from my tool bag to cut the foil. If possible, use a square or longer ruler when cutting the film. You get a smoother and better finish. The skylight application went as expected and I was pleased with the results. I could tell the difference in the kitchen the first morning after installation. I have double doors in the basement and have decided to use additional foil on them. Although the foil is about an inch narrower than the door windows, I was looking for function, not form. A slight opening at the edge of the film is no problem for me. The photo is to show the difference after applying the film to the left door.
