Review on Black Vantec NexStar DX USB 3.0 External Enclosure for SATA Blu-Ray/CD/DVD Drive by Laura Douglas

Revainrating 4 out of 5

I had trouble with that, however.

I bought a 12.7mm drive case, so my review is dedicated to this one. The first one I received I followed the instructions in the email. After everything was assembled, the instructions said to use both cables if you are not sure if your computer's USB port can only power the device from the main cable. what I did. The device will then continue to connect and disconnect repeatedly. I then unplugged the device and waited for my computer to catch up as it seemed to connect/disconnect very quickly and took about 30 seconds to finish. Then I tried just the main cable with the same results when plugging and unplugging. I tried different USB devices on each port to see if they worked and they were. I thought the unit was defective so I sent it back for a replacement. It arrived in about 2 days and I honestly didn't have high hopes as I saw someone with the same problem but thought maybe it was just a coincidence. I reinstalled the drive, used both power cords, and the connection/disconnection occurs again. I tried with 1 cable, it still happens. but this time i noticed something. When I plugged in the first cable, I observed the hard drive access with a connection beep. but failed after I connected a second cable for additional power. I unplugged the device again and this time restarted the computer. When booting, I only tried the main cable. he made an accompanying noise, and that was it. I tried opening the disk and it worked with no problems. I put the media in the drive and it read it just fine. I think the problem is Windows 10 related because it happened on all my PCs with Windows 10 installed. I think it tries to read the device on the second cable and gets confused. Also it didn't work from my USB hub, I had to plug it directly into my tower. So my final take on this is that it's a good device and if I had understood the issue earlier I probably would have noticed that the first one actually works. So if you have the same problem, just restart your computer and use the main cable only. Since then I haven't had any more problems.
