Pros: - Speed. If you're not installing a latch, you can quickly remove the old handle and install one of these handles in 5 minutes or less. - Cost (mine here is about $12) - Availability (can be found here, Home Depot, Lowes, anywhere) - SmartKey Re-Key is a wonderful thing. Key lost? Stolen? Doesn't matter. Switch the toggle switch to a different button. Insert old key, turn, insert SmartKey tool (or something similar in size), remove, remove old key, insert new key, turn, done. The new key works now, the old (original) key does not work. Can be done in 10 seconds or less. On holiday? Recode 1 lock into an alternate key and give it to a neighbor. When you return, re-enter your key. you can let them keep the ones you gave them or not, it doesn't matter it doesn't work anymore - Strong enough but not heavy - Aesthetics. they are not particularly fancy. but it's a doorknob, so who cares? most of them are utilitarian. - A smaller cover may not cover large openings - doesn't the rekey-toggle-reset feature cause the lock to fail over time? Maybe I won't know for years to come. Other reviewers had instant crashes. I haven't had this problem before - the concept of a resettable SmartKey tumbler can allow criminals to easily pick locks. There are videos on YouTube picking this type of lock (because of the SmartKey feature itself) in seconds with a plug + screwdriver. Note that any dummy can break open most locked doors, as the door frames are little more than plywood and a large enough child could easily smash through a window. The guy in No Country for Old Men used a simple canister of some kind of compressed gas to pick all the locks in that film. Again and again. I called Kwikset and asked if the YouTube videos are for CURRENT models and they say NO! do you believe them Are they still easy to beat? you say no You may only want to install them INSIDE your home as I need to keep certain rooms off-limits to children. Obviously, it is not in the manufacturer's interest to emphasize the shortcomings of their products. Kwikset has SmartKey products (bolts) that claim to be rated ANSI/BHMA Level 1 (the highest), but this is not one of them. align first. If you bought a few of these, you'll probably get the hang of it after making 1 or 2 of them. although quite annoying. As others have pointed out, there is no simple, easy, and instant method to release a lock. Whether your pen is left or right, it's crap. Another solution could be a simpler hardware solution to allow the lock to be rotated somehow. but not with this pen. That means you either have to install it upside down (not a big deal to some, but it will bother a lot of people like me) or you have to use the Kwikset 81467 cylinder remover (or a long screwdriver like this the same size). there are videos on youtube showing how to do it. This is especially bad for screws. In the end, the price and the SmartKey re-key feature (if it doesn't compromise the security of the product) make it better than other brands overall.
