I got these cutting boards to replace the cheaper flexible ones we have but ended up gifting them to one of my daughters friends who was admiring them and wanted them to use at home. They are thick and well made. I have a couple of these hard type cutting boards but these have rubber handles which make them grip the counter and are more slip resistant. These also have channels to catch any liquid from the foods you are cutting which is a huge help to prevent messes on your counters. It does kind of get in the way if you like to slide things off your board into a pot, for instance. I didn't try out the knife as I have a whole set of expensive chef knives, but the addition of the knife is a nice bonus and would be welcome for someone starting out in a new apartment.
