Most dishes are lead-free only on the shiny surface. Once the luster is scratched, the lead can leak. However, according to their website, Fiestaware is completely lead-free. From the ceramic base to the high gloss finish. If I'm eating organic, why would I do it on a lead-leached plate or bowl? It's worth my dollars. If you see lead-free products, make sure it's not just the outer coating.
