ENC8A not very good

My ENC8A never goes into maintenance mode. 120Ah deep cycle battery, 1 month old, never used, previously charged with a friend's 10 amp Schumacher which worked perfectly. This thing quickly rose to 14.5 volts, but won't go into service mode. I figured (Schumacher took about 4 hours from the store with a new battery, I expected less than 2 since it was already charged) so I went to bed believing it would do the job. BAD IDEA. When I remembered checking it, it had welded the battery in almost 14 hours. It's supposed to get 14.6v, then go into maintenance mode and turn it back on to 12.8v. The problem is that he couldn't get it to 14.6v, so it stayed at 14.5v for too long. Schumacher basically had the same logic but got it up to 15.0v before going into service mode switch. Seems like I'll have to settle for that or spend triple that for BatteryMinder or BatteryTender. I really hope this hasn't destroyed my new battery. I guess maybe I just got a bad one, but I'm not risking my battery for another. This one returns. UPDATE: I decided to try again before sending it back. Since the battery has been sitting for a week, I expected it to need a little charging (I measured it at 12.86V), but I wanted to look at the charger to see if it would go into service mode. Well, I was distracted and forgot about him after dinner, went to bed and woke up from a deep sleep at 4am. Don't forget to check him - I ran to him and he's still charging at 14.5 BC. Again never the required 14.6v. 12 hours of charging with a new battery and the charger still didn't think it was charged. I hope I didn't ruin the battery. I'm packing it up for return today. UPDATE 2: I finally bought the BatteryMINDer 128CEC1. Wow what a difference. Sure, you pay a lot more for it, around $150, but it's flawless. Charges fast, doesn't recharge and constantly desulphates in maintenance mode, specifically with my new battery, prevents sulphation. (But remember this isn't for small batteries - there are other models for that.)

Pros
  • Constant test results
Cons
  • No performance
