I have owned 32 digital cameras since 1992 so I am picky about image quality as it is the most important factor in owning or selling a camera. I currently only have 4 out of 32 and this camera is one of them. The image quality outdoors in bright light is amazing and compares very well to my 35mm camera. The images are clean, bright, vibrant and simply beautiful. Even if you compare this camera and my 35mm lens side-by-side at the pixel level, you can see that the difference is negligible. The optics and the HD processor are excellent. Movies in the new format are also amazing. This is the goalkeeper. I can't confirm its strength or waterproofing as I plan to only use it in rain and snow, so I won't test it underwater. In low light indoors it's like other great pocket cameras but not much better, but outdoors it's excellent. I love all the Panasonic cameras I've had over the years and have another Lumix on my watch list. This is currently the best travel camera for the price as it is small and relatively light with no protruding lens. In short, there's no sacrifice in image quality due to stacked optics or waterproofing.
