Toxic chemical odor, will decompose

Good: Looks like the picture, feels soft. . I never wash my hats before I put them on, but there was a smell of burning dirt all around the little girl. It's like a mixture of burnt hair and burnt rubber and something indistinguishable. I feel sorry for the people who make these hats as they are likely to be exposed to this in everyday life, but this is wrong. We found that the smell couldn't be a sign of something highly toxic, maybe a mix of pesticides and formaldehyde. We've washed it once without baking soda (at first you assumed a normal wash would work, now you're worried about that load of clothes) then with baking soda, still stinks. What's stupid is that after the first wash (soft cold) the material has already started to crumble/hair fall out, the second time it already looks like hot garbage. I know it's cheap compared to some other brands (that's why I bought it) but I regret it. No money saving makes this normal. It appears to be more than just formaldehyde, and even that's not normal, people assume, because it's a common agent that's safe to wash off, but it's not. This is despair. I'm not that desperate for a hat, thank goodness. In the bin, I hope the best for the people dealing with the use of these chemicals!
