Each socket supports heating/cooling mode. You need some patience to understand the instructions. I would NOT use this in an animal environment first, but would test it with an empty tank first until you see how it works. You want to leave a small temperature differential between the on and off cycles to allow for drift. a little. I use it in a greenhouse to control a fan to open when it gets too hot and turn off and close when it gets too cold. It's great for this (the plants don't pant when the temperature drops a few degrees like some animals do) and saves me trying to remember to turn on the fan. I also have a second fan on the second output that turns on at a slightly higher temperature when the first fan isn't enough to cool. I checked the calibration with ice water as they suggested and it was correct at 0°C. It says nothing about waterproofing so I would keep it away from water.
