The old headphone jack on my 160GB iPod Classic (not sure which generation) stopped working properly so I decided to give it a try and to fix it Don't buy a new iPod. I followed the "Replacing the iPod Classic headphone jack and switch" guide on the ifixit website and required fine tools and a very small Phillips screwdriver. I have very little experience with electronics repairs, but I was able to install a new headphone jack without too much trouble. The hardest parts were separating the front and back of the iPod and correctly plugging in the new headphone cable. It just takes a little patience and a careful hand. My iPod now works the same as before.
