The first latch we tried broke after a few weeks and the dogs realized they could bang on the door and the gate would open. This bar is so good and strong it seems it can last forever. And with that kind of latch, dogs are now kept in and cared for in the parts of the house where we spend most of our time. The only downside to the bolt, at least for us, is that it only comes in stainless steel, not another finish. We want the latch to be black so we're going to powder coat it. The latch worked so well for us that we don't mind spending extra money to fix it.
