A 9 volt battery is used. Everything about this device, from the design to the ease of use, the information provided and the export options available (printer or computer) is of professional/commercial quality. It has comfortable rubber side panels that also serve to absorb shock when dropped and prevent paint chipping. The clamps are small enough to fit on any terminal and are also well insulated. It runs on 6V or 12V and I was able to operate it with Mechanix gloves. It's just well thought out, well made, specialized professional kit that does one thing and does it really well.
