I bought this after reading an article on Epicurous that recommended it as a cheap but effective slicer. Wow I wouldn't want to try the others they compared it to. Tried the slider once with the golden Yukon potato - more like a potato. It always got stuck in the blade. The hand guard you use to push groceries through is pretty much useless. You have to press so hard to push the food through that it slides off the food leaving little marks of abrasion. I had to finish the job with a chef's knife. I tried julienning with carrots and celery root. This works, but makes a big mess (see photo) and you have to use your hand (with a protective glove) - and only you can only get about half of the veggies through (again, the guard/holder isn't good). On the other hand, it can be washed in the dishwasher. I'm asking Santa for a real Big Girl Mandolin this holiday season and hoping for better results.
