The blade guard was almost impossible to remove. Husband tried, no bones. Finally, I took a rubber mallet and a butter knife, placed the butter knife on the edge of the plastic at the pointy end of the guard, and asked my husband to bang the hammer on the butter knife handle. It fell off immediately. Be sure to look at the small photo on the packaging. There is a notch on the stainless steel to hold the crossguard, which is almost invisible in the photo. Once you know where the notch is, removing it will be easier. The holes are good for cleaning mint and rosemary, but the grinder is pretty useless and very inconvenient to use. Just use a chef's knife and keep a guard so you don't cut yourself. I assume this tool is great for kale.
