Why does size have to be so complicated?

I am writing an early review and will post about comfort and durability later. My family is taking a short trip to Branson, so I was looking for just the right shoes that would not only be comfortable to walk all day, but also get wet. I ordered sneakers for myself and my 7 year old daughter. A few Chacos and my 3 boys got Tewas. I had trouble choosing the size when ordering. Some reviews say to order a size down, others say it fits true to size, and others swear to order up. I'm a women's size 8 so I bought Chaco at 8 and they fit perfectly! At the same time, my daughter wears a child size 2, so I ordered it. Yes No. They were too big for her. There was no way to set them tight enough to make them work. I sent them back and ordered a new size 1. They will be here on Friday and I'm praying they fit better because I wanted all of us to have time to try them on well before we go to make sure they fit. I would say the quality is excellent. They were just like mine in terms of quality and adjustability. The Tevas I ordered for my boys won't be here until Saturday so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for them. They have similar mixed sizing reviews. Why does it have to be so hard?
