Don't waste your time.
Does not work like an official Apple product. Technically it works, but there are all sorts of weird glitches. It had to be plugged into a power source and connected to the phone. That won't work reliably. Apps like Netflix won't work because they need HDCP protection. If you need such an adapter, only Apple. Like you, I hate buying an overpriced key, but in this case, it's worth it.
