We're gradually filling the 'chest of hope' for a student with his first apartment only a year away. He's a big steak lover (at least when his parents are paying!) so these knives are a great addition. I wouldn't say they are heavy duty or likely to last a lifetime, but for a beginner they are fine. They're pretty sharp and the rubberized handle feels good in your hand. It's a little odd that despite being made of stainless steel, the blade is thin enough to be flexible. I'm not sure if that's a good thing; Just a difference I've noticed from our own steak knives. But a student will be happy with it, I'm sure.
