We bought the changing table because we needed a place to change the baby so our back doesn't hurt. None of the surfaces we already had were the correct dimensions. A friend came over and built it for us and it didn't seem like a big problem for her. I use a summer changing pad and use the extra 3 inches of space for storage for wipes, ointment and some diapers. I bought a narrow storage basket next to the changing mat to keep wipes, ointments and diapers in so they don't fall out. There isn't much storage space in the changing table, but any storage space is a good place. My cat loves the new jungle gym we got him.
