Review on StarTech Com USB C Hard Drive Enclosure by Michael Briggs

Star-Tech 2.5 " Hard Drive Enclosure

I put a 5TB Seagate SATA 6 hard drive in this case to offload 1TB of internet downloads. The specification on the case indicates a maximum speed of 10 GB. A USB-C cable is included in the box. I keep confusing USB-C with Thunderbolt 3, which would allow me to free up one of the two USB 3.1 ports, but it seems that USB-C is not a Thunderbolt 3 port, just Thunderbolt. Anyhow, the results I observed in the Windows "Move" dialog read a reading of 25MB per second at a full 1TB transfer rate. He (Windows 10 Pro) said the process would take 5 hours, and it actually took exactly 5 hours to transfer this data from my laptop's "D" drive to my StarTech external case. Perhaps this information will help you evaluate your transfers based on the amount of data you plan to move. I searched google for a thunderbolt 3 enclosure and found 1 company that made a thunderbolt 3 enclosure but they only got 20 gig max and they were raid enclosure types starting at $4000. At this price these $30.00 StarTech cases should be fine. Note. These Star-Tech cases fit Seagate 5TB drives that are 15mm high, and that's fine. They are made of durable plastic and won't scratch after a few uses like aluminum cases do.

Pros
  • Sturdy construction
Cons
  • Ugly packaging
