so this thing may not run perfectly straight. it's not for me, the center was probably 20 degrees to the right. no one in their right mind would agree with that. it wasn't impossible tight, so I turned a bit more until it was perfectly centered. Well, then the ball came loose from the thread. now the metal thread was sticking out a bit from the ceramic ball, no big deal, I just stuck it back into the ground but it was still loose. I flipped it completely and planned to seal it in place with rubber glue. The problem is that the shift rod pushes the ball out of the threads so it now sticks out a good 1/8 inch. took a hammer and a soft pad and put it back in. except I didn't because the bottom of the ceramic had chipped off. I can design it better from the start, create a threaded sleeve that screws into the shifter mechanism in the form of a gear, but with very fine short teeth. Add some rubber glue or other super strong glue so the buyer can screw on the metal part and then pick up the shift knob by themselves. That way you don't have to try to sidestep the fact that each machine is unique. takes less than a minute to do it this way.
