I have a 4 year old boy. The ball sticks very well to the glove. Actually too good that my son has a hard time throwing it up. This is a double-edged sword. If it doesn't hold well, the mitten won't catch the ball and the baby won't have fun. My son learned to roll the ball sideways instead of pulling it straight. He has a cute claw that doubles as extra protection so he doesn't get hit in the face with a ball. And he likes that he sticks. If it didn't stick, he wouldn't like it and he'd lose interest, so I think a sticky glove is a good thing.
