Review on ⛰️ Translucent Sharpening Whetstone TAP 13A L from Arkansas by Joseph Whiteman

Revainrating 4 out of 5

TO UPDATE! Decreased quality but still a good stone

I bought some Dans sharpening stones in 2016 and they are amazing. My rating of them is below. I'm saving this part of my review FOR THE EVENT AT THE TIME I HAVE A BAD STONE THIS TIME. I only use old rocks for gun making so now in 2020 I bought another (soft/medium) for knives and an ax while camping. . I don't know if I got a bad one or if the stones are cut differently now, but all the edges on them are bevelled. It's good for sharpening blades or polishing flat surfaces for weapon projects, but useless for certain smithing jobs where you need the perfect 45 degree angle (e.g. hammer hooks). The quality of the sheath is also lacking now. I used to have beautiful dark and elastic skin. The new sheath is off-white, thinner, and feels like plastic. Even the stitching is cheap. The stitching doesn't go far enough up the sides and the stone slides out easily. What are they trying to do to save a penny on string for every 10 shells they make? Downgraded to 4 stars this is still a great stone for the money just not what it used to be. I wish the price would go up but the quality stays the same. Don't forget to check the bevels on the new stone in the photo. REVIEW 2016 Top notch and what a beautiful stone! Perfect cutting with sharp edges at exactly 45 degrees and all surfaces perfectly flat. All corners have a sharp point with no chips. Even pay for a smaller translucent Arkansas stone at a gunsmith shop and you'll pay twice as much. I use this stone. for several trigger jobs in 1911. The stone is large enough to lightly polish the sides of parts like the hammer, sears, and even the trigger guard. Smoothing and polishing hammer hooks requires a perfect 45 degree sharpening stone, this stone can do it too! Be sure to use a light oil when working, wipe off and reapply frequently. I bought this one in extra small and the other in small (only $13 are you kidding!?) Next time I order from Revain I will buy one in medium. (only $10!) Cool leather case - nice touch, great job Dan!
