I have shelves at work and these knee pads do really well on smooth floors. I don't bother with the top strap as it wraps uncomfortably around the back of my knees. The bottom strap holds the mat perfectly. Your knee will eventually flatten the padding in one spot and lose its softness. When that will happen is anyone's guess. Sometimes it's 4 months, sometimes pads can last more than a year. When the padding eventually wears out, simply rotate it 180 degrees to use it for a few more weeks. Once the pads are useless for work, just take them home and use them for gardening.
