We fell in love with this concept when we saw it. Two kids in our families love games and the idea of designing their own was a fun challenge. One kid got this smaller set and the older one got the larger set so we could compare. First, I recommend having the kids plan their game and even do drafts of designs before they start there. That's not a bad idea for teaching them how things are designed and developed and also spares from initial mistakes. The larger set has more punch cards but less of the shiny things, especially the play crystals, included in this smaller set. But the kids found scope for both sets, because they of course consulted with each other. So the main difference between the sets--beyond a dollar or two in price--is the materials included. This smaller set has more play pieces included, primarily those crystals and dice they can customize. The larger set has more blank materials for art design. Overall, the materials are good quality for a game set, better and more uniform than materials you'd gather around the house. It feels more like a real game for the kids. I'm fascinated with their imaginations, too.
