As other commenters have mentioned, Lodge seems to only beef up these items to prevent rust. Like all cast iron shafts, it is not smoothly finished. My trivet came with two very small nicks that were rusty. It gave me a reason to do what I wanted to do anyway. I sanded down the burrs on the front of the stand with a small grinder, then soaked it in vinegar to remove the rust. It was then treated with Easy Off Oven Cleaner to remove any spice residue. After drying, I applied a thin layer of Crisco to it and baked it at 375C for 75 minutes. Repeat the process after cooling. I now have a smooth, rust free and well seasoned coaster. The lodge did an excellent job but at this price point a little more TLC is not unexpected.
