Review on ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ TASCAM DR-05 Portable Digital Recorder (Version 2): Unleashing Enhanced Recording Capabilities by Greg Muiznieks

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Handy portable tape recorder in stereo quality (or MP3)

My daughter needed a digital tape recorder for a Manhattan class on How to Succeed on Broadway. She was advised to have a recording device for certain sessions. It had to be sensitive enough for their sessions, and ease of use was a must. I shipped it with heavy duty AAA alkaline batteries. I also bought extra memory cards for backup purposes. There are several levels of recording quality, the highest level takes up the most storage space. Since the goal was to record specific sessions, I set the quality to MP3. One important tip: the record button must be pressed to prime it and then again to start recording. You don't want to miss your chance. There are many adjustable features, including the backlight setting, which can also affect battery life (5, 10, 30 seconds, continuous or off). The sensitivity of the microphone can be adjusted to pick up the softest sound, or it can be used to pick up only the intended speaker. I also bought a set of headphone jacks so she can also hear the quality of the microphone recording in real time. The two built-in microphones are permanently installed. There is an additional input jack for an external speaker. There's a built-in anemic and not very loud speaker, making it almost useless for any practical purpose. The menu system allows the user to adjust various settings such as file size, compression rate, stereo/mono, etc. The menu system is quite extensive and it really needs a manual to fully understand the operation. Playback via dictaphone is possible, but it is better to use external headphones or a headset. The recording quality was excellent for voice recordings. Due to the sensitivity of the built-in microphones, some user adjustments are required to achieve an acceptable balance. The recorder is quite large. That's more than I expected, but I'm not surprised at the possibilities. It's lightweight but doesn't have a strap or carrying case. This is a delicate mechanism that requires a suitably sized camera bag. The screen is easy to read. The red indicator lights up during recording. Battery life is excellent for the size (12-14 hours) depending on the backlight used. You can use Micro SD (up to 32GB) or Micro SDHC (up to 64GB). It does not accept Micro XHD. The card can be read directly into a laptop via a Micro SD or SDHC adapter (the most efficient and fastest transfer) or via a MINI USB adapter (not Micro USB). This is great for recording for general use, podcasts or vocals. with the tool (with the appropriate additional nozzles, which are not included in the scope of delivery).
