Review on Olympus Digital Voice Recorder 6200PC by Terry Reed

Incredibly easy to use for interviews

As a cultural anthropologist and freelance journalist, I have reviewed many dictaphones in the past and have been disappointed in many. This model is by far the best I have ever used! Familiarization with the device is easy and only takes 10 minutes. Yes, the USB cable is a bit short, but that shouldn't bother you too much and certainly shouldn't detract from the overall grade of the device. The model feels a little wobbly, but I've carried it around town in my pocket for days with and without leather patches and haven't noticed any scratches, tears or dents yet. The recording quality of this device is simply exceptional. During an interview with a famous composer in Brooklyn last month, I berated myself for not having brought an external microphone when I was told I would be interviewing him in the hotel lounge. The hall was huge (about 150 feet by 300 feet) and filled with noisy groups of people, and the interviewee's interpreter was incredibly quiet. I was afraid to listen to the audio recording of the interview, I'm sure it would be useless, but I was very pleased to hear that the interviewee's and the interpreter's voice sounded perfectly clear, with no background noise, chatter or annoyingly loud cell phone conversations, which took place 10 feet from the US I also used this device to record phone interviews by holding an earpiece of my headset to the speaker and in all cases the audio was perfectly clear. I am really very impressed with the performance, battery life and fidelity of this device. If you are looking for an easy-to-use DVR that can perform exceptionally in tough environments, this is the product for you.

Pros
  • Voice activation increases recording time and saves battery by only recording when the microphone picks up sound.
