I use these to make wallets and they work great on cotton/canvas/vinyl. The posts aren't long enough for thicker items like multiple layers of leather, but I had no problem getting them through 6-8 layers of waterproof canvas. I use the tools that come with it, but with an arbor press instead of hammering it. With the arbor press, cutting tools and setting tools do their job effortlessly. From time to time I have a bend to the side so I have to redo it, but that's mostly because I'm in a hurry and not getting the instruments right. Overall, for the price, this is a good deal for lighter projects.
