Well, it's just ink that reacts to heat and looks like it's burned. After making my project (creating my design and using my thermal tool) I wanted to see if it would rub off with a damp cloth and it did. So it doesn't burn the tree, it just gives it the look. And it bleeds, it's almost impossible to get a clean design. If you are thinking about getting some kind of branding marker, just go for a real wood burning tool. You could also just use paint or permanent marker if you want.
