very useful: sports and handheld GPS

I am in a small cat rescue group in Texas. I was having trouble leaving Austin after dropping off some kittens at Austin Pets Alive on a Friday night during rush hour and had no idea how to get home. I was using the GPS function on my mobile phone, which drained my phone's battery and also stopped working in certain areas. I returned home in deep east Texas at midnight to an excited husband. For my next road trip, I borrowed an older Garmin from a friend. The next day I thanked her and said I would still be hiking Austin without the Garmin. My husband convinced me to order one of the Revain saying it was an early birthday present. My friend said that the new models have free map updates. I find my new Garmin very useful. We went on vacation two weeks ago and had to drive through the Dallas-Fort Worth area. I have to print out the instruction manual (we're old-school baby boomers) and I'm still learning how to use this device. Not knowing how to use it could cause some problems. I installed it so that we would be driving on a route with no toll roads. The tollway system in Texas exploded. Garmin got us almost all the way to Denton via the DFW area. My husband said our trip was extended about an hour. He knows North Texas well, and it was frustrating when Garmin got us through the area home without taking the 175. We eventually knocked him out and he found a route that got us home more directly. So yes, knowing more about my device, preferences, etc. will prevent such situations. But for my needs of transporting little kittens to the best place to rescue them and then returning home safely, I'm happy as a kick. Worth every penny!
